Drugs Became a Financial Issue
The use of drugs, particularly ecstasy, significantly lowered alcohol sales at The Haçienda, as individuals who were high tended to lose interest in drinking. With fewer people drinking, security became more challenging. While alcohol often leads to aggression, ecstasy created a sense of love and unity. However, the rise of dealers and gangs managing the supply brought about increased issues at the entrances and behind the scenes.

The Problem With Commercialisation

Rodrigo Constanzo and Terry Christian explain how commercialisation started a downwards spiral:
Raids and Panic

In the early 1990s, the increasing number of people at The Haçienda changed the vibe completely. As acid house and rave culture took off, the club evolved into more than just a popular spot in Manchester, it became the ultimate destination, attracting larger crowds than ever. The dancefloor was filled to capacity with people immersed in the euphoric beats, creating a sense of togetherness and wild freedom that made each night feel like a momentous occasion.

Brawls erupted, security found it increasingly difficult to keep the peace, and there were even instances of gunfire within the venue. With alcohol sales dropping because of ecstasy use and the club finding it hard to make a profit, it just couldn’t sustain reopening after each shutdown.
Cheetham Hill Gang
The Cheetham Hill Gang were at the heart of trouble in the Hacienda. They kicked off a violent 6 years in January 1991 when a gang member pulled a gun out on the doorman leading to its closure for 2 weeks.
The Salford Crew
The Salford Crew held the door for multiple Manchester nightclubs, yet none were as lucrative as the Hacienda. This led to them being involved in the three way war.
Gooch Close Gang
Moss Side gang also known as 'Gooch Close Gang' were the main drug supplier throughout the 80s and 90s and were determined to supply the Hacienda. All three gangs came to a head in the club leading to its eventual demise.
The Final Straw
The death of two men on the door of the club was the nail in the Hacienda's coffin. Tony Wilson believed the environment had become to hostile to run...
